How Happ Proxy mode is built

In Proxy mode, Happ spins up a local proxy server based on Xray-core, and only the apps or browsers specifically configured to use it send traffic through that proxy. This setup is handy when you want to redirect particular programs rather than the whole device, without standing up a system-wide VPN tunnel.

How VPN mode compares

VPN mode works the opposite way: Happ creates a virtual network interface and routes all device traffic through it — browser, apps, and system services alike. It's the most predictable connection method, since there's nothing to configure per app; everything works as soon as the key is added.

The shared technical foundation

Both VPN and Proxy run on Xray-core and rely on the same key issued through the Happ Telegram bot — there's no separate encryption protocol to set up. The only difference is how traffic enters the tunnel. A full breakdown is on /en/proxy/.

When proxy beats VPN

Happ Proxy mode is worth choosing when:

• only a browser or a specific app needs to route through the server;
• a system-wide VPN clashes with other software or the device's network settings;
• you need finer control over which traffic goes through the server and which stays direct.

Turning Proxy on in the app
